Hillel House of Mitzvahs

Hillel House of Mitzvahs is a volunteer initiative that allows CEGEP and university students to do hands on volunteer work in a meaningful way. This initiative provides students with the chance to get involved in multiple different volunteer activities, working with a wide variety of populations and organizations. Hillel House of Mitzvahs aims to have at least 1 volunteer event each month throughout the school year. Hillel House of Mitzvahs is comprised of 7 rooms. These include: the Hillel pantry, the Hillel closet, the Hillel playroom, the Hillel kitchen, the Hillel bedroom, the Hillel family room and the Hillel backyard. Each volunteer activity done corresponds to a room in the house. Since Hillel House of Mitzvahs does not require a large commitment from the volunteers, the volunteers have the opportunity to choose which events they would like to attend and participate in. In addition to helping those in need, Hillel House of Mitzvahs aims to empower the student volunteers by allowing them to formulate their own volunteer programs and work with populations they are interested in and implement these programs.

PB& Jam
PB JAM is Hillel House of Mitzvahs first initiative, created to benefit the homeless. This evening consisted of eager volunteers, bagels, and lots of PB and Jelly. This program was a huge success as we had many new friendly faces entering the Hillel House ready to get down and dirty making sandwiches. Over 35 students gathered around tables making peanut butter and jelly, and cream cheese sandwiches, while listening to music and having a good time! After our huge accomplishment, in making 700 sandwiches, approximately 20 students went to two homeless shelters, The Old brewery mission and Dans la Rue, to distribute these sandwiches. An important Jewish value is Kupah, this value emphasizes “the obligation of every Jewish community to establish a communal agency to collect resources and distribute them to the needy”. By adhering to this value, students left this evening feeling great and having made a difference in the lives of the less fortunate!
