  • Keven Asch has chosen a most unusual, even surprising, topic for his first feature film: the involvement of chassidic Jews in the international drug trade. Inspired by real events in the late 1990s, Holy Rollers unfolds in Williamsburg, an insular chassidic enclave in Brooklyn, N.Y. Scheduled to open in Toronto and Montreal on June 18, the film is basically a cautionary tale with a wise and enduring message: crime does not pay. Hollywood has churned out numerous moralistic films about the drug culture, but to the best of my knowledge, this is the first one in which chassidic Jews are at the centre of the plot. Though Chassidim are highlighted in Holy Rollers, the narrative is depressingly familiar. An innocent, pure young man, Shmuel (Sam) Gold, drifts into a life of crime, cunningly lured there by a more worldly chassidic Jew, Yosef (Justin Bartha).  (CLICK HERE FOR MORE)
